THE BOY WHO LEARNED TO STAND
From a Childhood of Fear to a Life of Purpose
A memoir by Joe Elvis Alway

Growing up in the Bronx, Joe Elvis Alway learned to fear the people who were supposed to protect him. He survived abuse, was humiliated in classrooms because he couldn’t read, and was cast out of his church at fifteen. Through it all, he kept dancing, performing, and dreaming.

That boy grew into a man who found his voice in theatre, dance and teaching. He loved deeply and lost too much to AIDS, and he built the family he had once only imagined. This is an honest memoir about survival, faith, forgiveness and the courage to keep standing.

Content note: includes childhood abuse, religious rejection, addiction, suicide and the AIDS crisis.
